08 Nov Georgia on our mind…
We are learning a lot about simple. Simple is to pack a lunch in the morning, so as we travel, we can stop at all these (quite lovely) rest stops along our route to our next campground. The rest stops we are coming across bear no resemblance to the ones we always stopped back and forth to visit parents in South Jersey, or a kids at college. No sir, these rest areas in the Carolina’s and Florida feel like little parks where we stop, eat, breathe, and move on. They are pretty and well maintained. Love seeing the pride the caretakers of these places have in these spots that most only spend a moments in.

Rest Area Loveliness
Day eight of our travels brings us to a campground called Happy Camper RV Park somewhere in Georgia. Smack in the middle of a gently used residential neighborhood near an military base. It was pretty obvious that most of these were permanent tenants, probably in the service, with one or two sites for people passing through. We arrived to a plethora of colorful manufactured homes along with some travel trailers. All super clean and cared for. Had been raining a lot on this drive, arrived to a most glorious rainbow. As if God was saying “Welcome, come for a rest”.

Welcome Rainbow

Colorful Living
More rain day nine gave us the chance to just stay put and catch up on “stuff” Ya know, when your life is on the road you still have “stuff” you have to take care of. Won’t bore you with details. Ya”ll (we are in the south) know what I’m talking about.

Hop on Bus Selfie

Beware- Spanish Moss
Savannah GA was a short drive from where we landed. This city has been a bucket list destination for us both for a long time. And she didn’t disappoint. We did the touristy thing and bought the hop on hop off bus ticket. So worth the money. Neither of us knew much about Savannah. So having these bus drivers who share all these great historical and fun facts was perfect. Possibly the most important personal tidbit I learned was “Don’t touch Spanish Moss”! Not talking about the bagged stuff you get at Michaels. Nope, this is the real deal. As pretty as it looks hanging from the huge old oak trees, they are full of chiggers. Yup…they bite. Long ago, people used this moss to fill bedding and pillows, only to be really itchy all the time. Learning this was important, don’t you think?

Happy Guy
Beautiful cobblestone streets, Savannah College Art and Design (SCAD), pralines, river walk watching boats, barges, and people, was such fun. Savannah allows you to walk about with beer (or other adult beverages) in plastic cups. This my friends, makes my husband very very happy. So, as we strolled on cobblestone streets and historical stairs (which we haven’t walked up many since leaving NJ in August. Oye Vey) we just soaked up the charm of this historical place.

Where is Hedy?
Perhaps my one disappointment, was looking for a souvenir with my name and not finding it yet again. You’d think at my age I’d have accepted this reality. Really, there has to be a few “Hedy’s” out there who want their name on a mug like me. 🙂
Finished this wonderful day back with a viewing of “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” in CR (Christopher Robin). Perfect way to end a day checking off that bucket list item.

Little Ocmulgee State Park
Off to a sweet campground called Little Ocmulgee State Park on day eleven, still in Georgia. Here we connected with friends we met two years ago on a river cruise down the Danube. After that trip in Europe, we felt like Mac and Barbara were old friends that we would one day see again. Instead of just exchanging our email addresses and leaving it there, we had the desire to actually make that happen. When you connect with people who make you laugh hard and smile often, its good to look forward to that again. So we reached out, told them we would be passing by, and asked if they would be around. They welcomed us to their home and shared a fantastic meal with us. Truly salt of the earth folk. Next day we showed them our version of camping, with a meal and campfire by CR. All that was missing was the smores.

Mac and Barbara
Note to self and anyone for that matter. When you simply say to someone “let’s get together again”, Do it! The time spent with them was priceless to us. We can’t wait to see them again. Oh, and the famous Statue of Liberty, Helena GA version was a hoot to see. Not an official bucket list item, just because we had no idea. 🙂

Statue of Liberty- Helena GA Style
Got some passengering to do tomorrow… so off to bed I go.
For Us, It’s Not Abad Day 🙂
